Norm’s attorneys hit 87 counties with document demands

I thought I’d lost the capacity for outrage, but that was before I saw this online poll:

Why would Obama not attend his grandmother’s funeral?

The funeral has not been held yet, but that didn’t stop some of the most hateful people on planet earth from leaving freakishly misanthropic replies. That would include Jen:

In my opinion Obama did not attend her funeral because he is a selfish self absorbed sadistic ass who thinks his campaign is more important then a treasured family members death. I would move oceans and Crosse stars to be there. no matter what is going on in my professional life.

None of this freakshow includes any kind of facts or links, but here’s the real story:

No plans for Dunham’s funeral or memorial service have been announced.

It is not uncommon for funerals to be held more than a week after the death of a Hawaii resident because of the time it takes for loved ones to fly to the Islands, said Jerry Andrade, funeral home manager of Borthwick Mortuary, which is handling Dunham’s arrangements.

He added that visitation and funeral services tend to be larger affairs in Hawaii than in the rest of the United States because residents here often have large families and collections of friends.

Obama will fly back in December and a memorial service will be held then.

You see crap like this online but I can’t imagine people saying shit like this in mixed groups. I know that if someone like “Jen” actually spat out that garbage in my presence I would be hard pressed not get up in her face and if it were a Jim, I might not be so loquacious.

No doubt about it, there is no shortage of anonymous cowards online. It never occurred to me that conversations like this one were being conducted. But top this off with something much worse: Fred Phelps survivors are flying to Hawaii to picket Dunham’s memorial service

Maybe. I can’t imagine they can afford to flit off to Hawaii on a moment’s notice, and no time or place have been set yet, and may not ever be publicly announced. Still, the most surprising thing to me is that Phelps’ clan is still alive and well and pulling this shit. I’ve been figuring them for a drive by Uzi’ing for years now given their sick apolitical hate-everyone ‘tude.

eRobin has a slideshow that drives home how utterly inappropriate this gangster style hating is. Click the link, it’ll take away the rotten feeling you got from the Phelps/Jen idiots.

Jim Naureckas on the absurd bipartisanship proposals being circulated by the phony centrists on the right. Digby’s aghast that Michael Feldman says Feingold can’t head the Foreign Relations committee because he was anti-war (WTF?). [Sirota has more.]

I’m still picking up my jaw off the floor from reading that the L.A. Times actually acknowledged that maybe, just maybe the U.S. should make the first move towards Iran given the “allegations” that we overthrew their democratically elected government in 1953.

That’s an awfully ridiculous “allegedly” but still, it’s nice to see an American newspaper acknowledge that other countries sometimes have cause to be pissed at us.

Between all the newspapers and NPR I can’t believe how much I’m reading/hearing about the unemployment rate and so far not one person has had the presence of mind to point out that the Bushies were undoubtedly gaming the numbers and have now stopped.

They lie about everything, why would they tell the truth about this one thing? Think Progress says the percentage of American adults working is at its lowest in fifteen years.

You can live to be 96 but that doesn’t mean that some of our nastier rags won’t cheapshot you after you’re dead. In this case that would be the NY Times pissing on Studs Terkel.

This is also my notice that now that I know the rules, I’ll be writing some pretty nasty stuff when the rest of the surviving “better dead than Red” crowd kicks.

How nasty is the right? This nasty. And yes, occasionally their heads perform 360° revolutions.

Digby on the shady goings on up north.

Josh Marshall has a nice snippet from the Hartford Courant:

When you consider the plight in which Harry Reid finds himself, consider this: Lieberman, who has broken violently with his party and engaged in campaigning loathsome fear-mongering against the man he once begged to come and save him, holds a prestigious committee chairmanship.

Hillary Clinton, at the moment, has no chairmanship at all because of the seniority system.

I’m stunned that there is any debate over this at all. Joe Lieberman not only should be booted from the caucus, but Senate jocks should give him daily wedgies and swirlies until he publicly apologizes for being such a backstabbing wanker.

Btw, Byrd has agreed to voluntarily step down as Appropriations chair.

This is gratifying:

We’ve been raising questions about the hometown Minneapolis Star Tribune’s coverage of the Franken/Coleman race, and today we have another.

The two are locked in what could be, statistically based on the total number of votes cast, the closest U.S. senate race in history. A recount is underway. And it’s a recount required by state law, because the vote was so close. In fact, Coleman’s original margin of victory, 725 votes (out of 2.9 million cast), has already shrunk to 236 votes.

So why this Strib headline today [emphasis added]? “Sen. Norm Coleman’s Democratic challenger is vowing to push ahead with a recount”.

Why the “vowing” language, which makes it seem like Franken’s just being a sore loser? Under Minnesota law, recounts are required if the final margin of victory is less than one-half of 1 percent. In the case of Franken/Coleman, the margin’s .01 percent. So of course there’s going to be a recount.

Also under state law, the person trailing can also request that the recount not go forward. But considering there’s already been a 500 vote shift in the process, naturally Franken’s not going to do that.

Seems to us that once again, the Strib has its thumb on the scale while covering this race.

County Fair

MPR says Norman “Iranians buy my suits and give money to my wife” Coleman’s attorneys just dumped a huge info request on all 87 sets of county election officials. Needless to say he’s using open record laws to make this request, trying to jump in front of the legally mandated recount process. I’m sure SoS Ritchie will give Norm full access, but I can’t imagine why he would do so before the recount is complete in all regards.

Bottom line? Franken’s been gaining votes so Coleman insists Al must be cheating and demands to see everything everyone’s got and no, you don’t need to stay in the room while my New York lawyers examine your files.

To which the proper reply would be, Nasser Kazeminy, Nasser Kazeminy, Nasser Kazeminy!

For an update on the final count before the recount, check out David Brauer.

Confused by shifting vote totals? City Pages had a good comment from Ed Nelson:

Obviously in Pine County the first report of 24 votes for Franken was incorrect and why someone forgot the 1 for the result of 124 is beyond me but the statistical spread for 124 makes alot more sense and jives with the rest of the area. In the iron range result it was reported today that they called in a result of 506 votes for Al Franken but the Secretary of State recorded the result in error as 406. So I don’t understand how someone making a clerical error is fraud?? Isn’t this why the vote tally is still called unofficial and hasn’t been certified??

Regardless all this whining by the Coleman camp these apparent errors are only strengthening Al Franken’s request for the recount which would be well-observed by both parties and would be a recount by hand. It is clear that this needs to occur and we won’t know anything until that is done.

Even the Coleman-supporting Fairmont Sentinel is getting tired of Norman’s whining, and this is only Day 3 of the Recount!
