Pontification:
That last link surprised me. As a resume writer my dealings with Hmong exposed me to many very conservative Hmong men, some of whom served in the CIA’s secret army. Other clients were actual relatives of General Vang, the extremely conservative leader of the CIA’s secret army.
Otoh, I know that — like many immigrant/refugee groups — Hmong are often on welfare. This isn’t a knock on the Hmong, it’s just that hunting/gathering skills aren’t highly prized by modern societies, and due to the persecution Hmong were subject to, much of their knowledge of farming disappeared over the decades since the U.S. pulled out of South Vietnam.
Despite the welfare, I expected the clannish Hmong to become Republicans. Many of their more entrepreneur-minded rank and file are, but this study says they’re mostly Dems.
Thinking about it a bit harder, I believe I know why that is. What follows is a purely subjective bit of guesswork, but one informed by the fact that I know way the fuck more Hmong than you do, and have been working with Hmong for nearly twenty years now.
Immigrants are racists. Say whatever you like, when your people came to this country the first thing they learned was that they were NOT at the bottom of the totem pole. Not unless they immigrated from Africa and had the same skin color as American slaves/former slaves/descendants of slaves.
So why are the Hmong different? Answer: they’re the n-ggers of SE Asia. Want to insult a Lao or Cambodian or Vietnamese or Thai? Ask them if they’re Hmong. Seriously, if you do you’ll be permanently damaging your relationship with that person. Traditionally Hmong are treated by SE Asians in much the same way Americans treat hillbillies, and for much the same reasons (unsophisticated country people who are unused to city ways).
So yeah, I can see why Hmong aren’t like other immigrant groups.
Welcome to the Democratic party! Nej tuaj los!
Election speech:
If you live in Minnesota, please vote AGAINST the Clean Water, Wildlife, Cultural Heritage, and Natural Areas Amendment. This is the coward’s way of funding necessary services, and puts the burden of clean water and the arts on the backs of the poor who pay a disproportionate share of all sales taxes. Liberals have long understood that the sales tax is our most regressive form of taxation and I say to hell with the DFL for endorsing this cowardly funding mechanism.
Otherwise I’m voting straight Democratic:
Obama-Biden
Al Franken
Betty McCollum
Alice Hausman
Your list may vary, depending on where you live. If you live in Minnesota and are not registered to vote, you can do so tomorrow at your polling place. Just bring a picture ID or a utilities bill showing your current address or show up with a neighbor who will vouch for you.
Me? I’ll be measuring the drapes for my new lifestyle, one in which I can turn on the TV without being assaulted by Republican lies, listen to the radio without hearing bullshit he said/she said’ism, and read the news without drowning in phony concerns from phony fucks who want to shut down this and every election they can’t win.
Obama? He’s on his own. After surviving 36 years of Republican administrations, I’m ready to spend some time enjoying life (as opposed to wondering who’ll we’ll be at war with tomorrow). Yes, this country’s in one hell of a mess, but now it’s Obama’s job to clean it all up.
However, if Republicans decide they just can’t bear not be in control, and if they fight to obstruct without having any kind of real game plan of their own . . . I’ll be back.
And next time, I won’t be nearly so fucking nice.
This blog will auto-destruct in six weeks and four days (the ninth anniversary of my first blog).

Walter Sobchak: Donny was a good bowler, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors… and bowling, and as a surfer he explored the beaches of Southern California, from La Jolla to Leo Carrillo and… up to… Pismo. He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would Donny. Donny, who loved bowling. And so, Theodore Donald Karabotsos, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince.

I like IPA, btw.
