Via Rachel Stassen-Berger at the Pi-Press, I just read a NY Observer article on Al Franken.
It’s refreshing to see a NY-based publication that’s mature enough to look past the hype to the WTF? aspect of the Franken campaign, which I’m coming to see as the ultimate expression of DFL incompetence.
No excerpt as this is a solid article that should be read in full. It’s also a good idea to remember that Franken has recently brought some serious people into his campaign, and is beginning to do some of the things he should have done long ago like admitting upfront that he’s said and written things many people might find offensive.
And if you need more encouragement to read the article, then think of it as the only way you’ll ever find out why Al Franken is like Ollie North.
I’m also posting this link at Daily Kos because someone needs to keep reminding the Netroots that they have no business butting into primaries. [link fixed]
UPDATE: If I ever post another diary entry at Daily Kos, it will be with an eye towards getting banned. I have never seen so many people so obsessed with the exact letter of their rules about posting. A short post that’s mainly meant to direct attention to a link should be short. The Observer link speaks for itself, and is insightful.
I hate when the Left gets organized because invariably the PC crowd shows up enforcing rules that were never meant to be more than guidelines. I’m about four months shy of the ninth anniversary of my first blog post, and I don’t need to be lectured by twits about their OC rules.
I also loved being told repeatedly that Franken won the primary already so get over it you Ciresi-supporting gasbag. Well, not exactly. None of them can spell Ciresi correctly, but you get the drift. No shortage of folks who don’t know squat about Minnesota but hey — Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot was the greatest book ever.
I’m waiting on the State Fair. If Al doesn’t get some traction and start turning this thing around, I may start promoting Lord Farris as our best shot at beating Coleman. Odd woman out in a three-way race? That’s good for starters. She’s never published any softcore porn? Even better.
But let’s see how the State Fair goes. Al’s new staff has already made a positive impact, and we just might see a new Al emerge. Because like it or not, he’s our best shot at this one, even if that hasn’t been good news to date.

Franken’s a smart guy but I’m not sure he’s Senate material, just yet. Maybe a State gig or Congress for a term or two, first…? He’s still fairly young, isn’t he? Hell, maybe a gig as Chief of Staff for another Senator for a term, even, just to give him some experience and exposure to the system. That said, could he be much worse than Coleman?
Ahhh, dKos… Some very smart, very passionate people there. Unf., I think some of them have fallen for their own hype. And, brother, if you’re not willing to put the time in, hanging out on large threads for days and weeks on end, you are NOBODY. But it’s a “community”. Ask ‘em, they’ll tell you.
Wow! That’s a pissy little comment thread, isn’t it.
Gotta have those 3 paragraphs, dammit!
Particularly annoying were the comments that a generally disliked incumbent couldn’t be ousted by a last minute replacement for a flawed candidate.
I’m thinking Perpich/Carlson/Grunseth in 1990.
OOOH — damned good talking point. And any mention of Grunseth is good in my book.
